We c{a}me {a}cross this {a}rticle on Women’s d{a}y the other d{a}y, {a}nd it h{a}s sever{a}l e{a}sy-{to}-le{a}rn tricks you c{a}n te{a}ch {to} your dog.  And they {a}re {a}ctu{a}lly e{a}sier th{a}n you think!

T{a}ke {a} Spin
Arden t{a}ught re{a}ders of our June 1, 2010, issue how {to} get their dogs {to} spin. Here {a}re the tips, in c{a}se you missed them:

1. Hold {a} tiny tre{a}t {a}t your dog’s nose, then move your h{a}nd slowly {to}w{a}rd his t{a}il. S{a}y “yes?{a}nd give the tre{a}t when he begins {to} move his he{a}d {a}w{a}y from you.

2. Gr{a}du{a}lly incre{a}se the turn by holding the food in your h{a}nd f{a}rther {a}w{a}y. When your dog confidently follows your h{a}nd through {a} full spin, s{a}y “spin?right before you move your h{a}nd {to} lure so he’ll st{a}rt {to} connect with the beh{a}vior.

3. Once he’s m{a}stered th{a}t, use {a} sm{a}ller h{a}nd circle {a}s {a} cue, so he’ll le{a}rn {to} spin when you m{a}ke th{a}t gesture {a}nd s{a}y the comm{a}nd.

Cr{a}wl {to} Your Owner
“Begin on {a} smooth surf{a}ce so your dog feels comfort{a}ble moving {a}long the floor,?suggests Arden. Help your pup m{a}ke his cr{a}wling debut with these steps:

1. St{a}rt by te{a}ching your dog {to} lie down. Hold {a} tre{a}t just in front of your dog’s nose when he is lying down {a}nd move it slightly forw{a}rd. Reinforce {a}ny movement forw{a}rd by s{a}ying “yes?{a}nd giving {a} little tre{a}t. If he tries {to} st{a}nd up, don’t s{a}y {a}nything. Simply st{a}rt {a}g{a}in.

2. When you {a}re confident th{a}t your dog underst{a}nds {to} follow your h{a}nd by st{a}ying low {to} the ground {a}nd inching forw{a}rd, {a}dd the cue “cr{a}wl” just before you begin {to} move your h{a}nd.

3. Move the tre{a}t progressively f{a}rther {a}w{a}y from your dog, but remember {to} be p{a}tient. Even if your dog is very fit, he will need {to} gr{a}du{a}lly build up {to} being {a}ble {to} cr{a}wl for more th{a}n {a} few inches.

T{a}ke {a} Bow
“This is {a} gre{a}t fin{a}le {to} {a} routine of tricks,?s{a}ys Arden. Follow these tips—{a}nd then get re{a}dy {to} {a}ppl{a}ud your dog.

1. Most dogs will stretch when they w{a}ke up or go in{to} {a} bow {a}s {a} w{a}y {to} solicit pl{a}y. In either c{a}se, you c{a}n c{a}pture the beh{a}vior by simply m{a}rking the moment she bows. S{a}y “yes” {a}nd give {a} tre{a}t. This w{a}y you {a}re cle{a}rly telling your dog th{a}t wh{a}t h{a}ppened {a}t the ex{a}ct moment she he{a}rd the m{a}rker sound is wh{a}t results in the rew{a}rd.

2. You c{a}n {a}lso lure this beh{a}vior by holding {a} tre{a}t {a}t your dog’s nose when she is st{a}nding. Lower your h{a}nd {to} the ground {a}nd be prep{a}red {to} m{a}rk the moment her front end goes down so she doesn’t slide her whole body {to} the ground {a}nd lie down. If she does, just try {a}g{a}in {a}nd be c{a}reful {to} m{a}rk before her re{a}r end st{a}rts {to} go down.

3. Once you c{a}n reli{a}bly get the bow either bec{a}use your dog is freely offering it or bec{a}use you {a}re luring, {a}dd the cue word or phr{a}se such {a}s “t{a}ke {a} bow?or “br{a}vo?right before she goes in{to} {a} bow so she st{a}rts {to} connect the verb{a}l cue with the beh{a}vior.
